Tesla is set to begin its self-driving robotaxi service on June 22 in Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter). The initial fleet will consist of 10 to 20 Model Y SUVs equipped with Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, operating under remote human supervision within a limited area.

Musk shared that the FSD system has already been tested extensively on Austin’s public roads. A recent video showed a driverless Model Y labeled “Robotaxi” navigating city streets without human intervention. Musk emphasized safety as a top priority, cautioning that the launch date might change based on safety considerations.

This rollout marks a significant milestone for Tesla as it pivots from focusing on affordable EVs to advancing autonomous driving technology. Starting June 28, Tesla plans to enable vehicles to drive autonomously from the factory directly to customers’ homes, further pushing the boundaries of automation.

While Tesla aims to expand the robotaxi service to other states such as California, strict autonomous vehicle regulations could slow the process. Details on pricing, service coverage, and public availability are yet to be announced.

Tesla’s robotaxi initiative comes amid a challenging period for the company, with slowing EV sales and criticism linked to Elon Musk’s political associations. Nonetheless, the Austin pilot is poised to be a key test for Tesla’s self-driving technology and future autonomous mobility ventures.
